Medical Helium Gas
Helium is a very light, odorless, tasteless, and colorless noble gas with a strong safety profile and multiple applications. A rare, chemically and physiologically inert gas, helium is relatively insoluble in body fluids, more viscous and eight times less dense than oxygen.
This rare element is critical in the medical world where ultra-low-temperature liquid helium is used to cool the superconducting magnets in MRI scanners. With its extremely low boiling point, helium gas is the first choice of hospitals to perform that crucial task. About a third of all helium produced is used in these medical instruments with industrial applications using up most of the rest.
Mixtures containing helium USP are used in respiratory treatments for asthma, bronchitis and other lung deficiencies, helping patients breathe easier.
